Briggs to tap social media to fuel interest in outdoor power equipment - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

is gearing up for an event aimed at generating hundreds of online product reviews and social media attention. The location, not yet finalized, will be "some place warm" in late winter or early spring, said Rick Zeckmeister, vice president of marketing and planning. Earlier this year, Briggs went to Phoenix for three days to solicit consumer feedback on nine new products, an effort that resulted in 460 online ratings and reviews. People were asked to test a riding mower, a pressure washer and other equipment. Then, on the spot, they gave a rating or wrote a review on iPads provided by the company. The tests were brief but focused and authentic, according to Zeckmeister, adding that they focused on various things such as how quiet a mower was compared with other mowers. During the event, Briggs also solicited feedback from about a dozen bloggers and others with social media influence. We believe this is the way to reach our next generation of customers," Zeckmeister said. Product reviews are important, with nearly 70% of consumers, and 81% of millennials, seeking advice and opinions before making a purchase, according to a survey of 2,000 U. S. adults. A majority of opinion seekers age 25 to 34 look to social media contacts for recommendations, the survey from Mintel Group, a market research firm, found. "Americans have what feels like an endless number of choices to make on a daily basis, and even the simple act of buying staple household products can be overwhelming to those who have yet to build brand loyalties or those who prefer to try out... Consumers also use product reviews to validate the choices they've made and avoid "buyer's remorse. " But some reviews are fake or wrong, which complicates things for people seeking honest opinions. As always, "let the buyer beware," said Tim Cigelske, social media director at Marquette University. At its Phoenix event, Briggs & Stratton said the consumer ratings averaged 4. 77 out of 5. In addition, the company captured 10 hours of video testimonials that are paying dividends online as well as with key retail customers. "We got genuine feedback from a lot of people," Zeckmeister said. The company has four people on its social media team and also uses outside agencies for various projects. It sent 25 people to the Phoenix product demonstrations. It's difficult to measure the dollar value from something like the Phoenix event because the results aren't immediate, according to Zeckmeister. "But I will tell you that the innovations we launched this last year met or exceeded our expectations," he said, and that consumer feedback was important. "When you show up at an event with nine products, and people start interacting with them, there's a moment of truth when you realize people genuinely, authentically, like them or not," he added. For businesses, the No. 1 rule of social media and events like product demonstrations should be to listen to consumers, Zeckmeister said. Companies want fresh online reviews, partly because it gives the impression that their products are still popular and the technology isn't out of date. Briggs' research showed that 87% of consumers want to hear from other consumers about a product they're considering purchasing. Reviews also give companies a chance to pull a product from the marketplace if it's not meeting consumer expectations. "Whether it's Twitter or online ratings and reviews, if you're not going to embrace it, and use it for what it can do, you're just wasting money," Zeckmeister said. He added: "We do market research and focus groups and things that other companies do, but if we are really going to understand how people purchase things, we have to get out there and engage them. The owner of this car posted a comment describing it thus (with added links to photos of what's being described): Hey Guys, thanks for noticing my car! 1958 MK1 3.4 Auto. I did add spoked wheels as the pressed steel rims were warped and not safe. I could not find originals and I like the spoked better. The cut away spats are in fact original to the 3.4 model, the earlier 2.4 had the full spats. I am sure the MK2 spats do not fit this car. I have the chrome for the front and rear windscreens but I think the prior owner put the wrong rubber seals so at present cannot be installed. The doors/windows are completely original and not the same as the MK2. Thank you again, she has had much suspension and breaking work and is cruising around with ease.
